Answer: 3500 calories.

Training Tip #2

Resistance training combined with cardio-vascular type exercises (walking, stair-master etc) will help you to lose body fat more effectively than just doing cardio-vascular type activities alone.

Definition: Resistance training is defined as any type of exercise that uses some sort of resistance to stimulate the muscles. This would include weights, exercise machines, rubber tubing or your own body weight.

The reasons for this are:

  1. Resistance training is the most effective way to stimulate muscle growth.
  2. When one has more muscle mass on the body then ones metabolism is higher.
  3. When ones metabolism is higher then the body will burn more fat as energy even when you are at rest.
  4. If you do only cardio-vascular type exercise you can actually lose muscle mass in the muscle groups that are not being worked. So if for example you are running as your main form of exercise you could start to lose muscle mass in your upper body.

So the moral of the story is if you are trying to lose weight then make sure you add a few days a week of resistance training to your program to speed up your progress.

If you have not trained with free weights or machines before then I recommend getting some basic education in the area from a qualified trainer before you embark on a resistance training program.
